IN SEARCH OF A VANCOUVER ISLAND SPORTS HALL OF FAME:
- by Brian W. Zelley, B. Com, C A
In recent years, Nanaimo has had three induction ceremonies, and in
November 2010 the Greater Victoria Sports Hall Of Fame will present
the Induction ceremony for the new inductees in the 17th Annual Ceremony.
In other cities towns and villages from places like Campbell River and Duncan,
they have recognized their athletes in the black and white pages of their local newspapers.
With the excellence recognized in Nanaimo and Greater Victoria, it would be
interesting if there was an Island wide Sports Hall of Fame. From the recent achievements of Island athletes at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games to
some of the Island athletes in the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame,
to those that have been recognized for special awards in individual sports,
there are plenty of potential athletes, coaches, official and other builders
that would qualify for induction into a Vancouver Island Sports Hall of Fame.
The big question is when or how will it happen?.
GREATER VICTORIA
the GVSHOF have inducted an interesting and impressive
group of individual athletes from KEVIN ALEXANDER to MARK WYATT
covering various sports from Auto Racing to
Wrestling, and such popular team sports of Lacrosse,
Basketball, Hockey and Soccer.
For auto racing there are several past inductees such as Dave Cooperand Billy Foster to 2010 inductee GARY KERSHAW. In wrestling, there is only one inductee
by the name of TARAS HYRB.
Greater Victoria also has a standout group ofbuilders
from TILMAN BRIGGS to WALTER YEAMANS. Some of the all-rounders in the building section include the likes of
TOM MCKEACHIE and DON WAKELYN.
