1994 COMMONWEALTH GAMES

MARCH 1991 VICTORIA COMMONWEALTH GAMES SOCIETY

In was still not the spring of 1991 and with three years to go there was much planning and preparation to go, and the sports committee meetings were an important place for the various sports to appreciate the other sports issues and share information about their own.

In 1990, some members of the various sports and the Victoria organization had participated in an observation role at the 1990 GOODWILL GAMES in Seattle. which provided an understanding of the organizational process.

The March Sports Committee meeting took place on March 11, 1991 at the PRINCESS MARY RESTAURANT. In attendance were 25 participants and five guests.

Participants were:
Jim Carter, Kjeld Brodsgaard, Ron Friesen, Hank Lyth, Leona Pederson, Don Smyth, Peter Vizsolyi, Bob Adams, Ron Bowker, Danny Henry, Gary Taylor, Bruce Wasylick, Monika Alde, John Edwards, Steve James, Sandy Peden, Austin Smith, Sandra Stevenson, Brian Zelley, Bob Bearpark, May Brown, John Mills, Bob Valcov, Bob Johnston and Corrine Lalonde.

Guests were Kimberley
Gilhooley. Barry McBride, Brian McCalder, Keith Newell and Charles Parkinson.

DANNY HENRY - coordinator for the VCGS Native Participation Committee was now also a member of the Sports Committee. For BRUCE WASYLICK, this would be his first Sports Committee meeting as he was the Vice President of Sports for the VCGS. Both Danny and Bruce were introduced by the Sports Chairman JIM CARTER.

The adoption of the agenda was moved and seconded by BRIAN ZELLEY and KJELD BRODSGAARD.

During the meeting, an interesting presentation on DIVING was made by RON FRIESEN also a video developed by the Diving Association's National office was presented in regards to Corporate sponsoring a diving event.

Members in attendance were also given an opportunity for PAN AMERICAN GAMES Accreditation.

THe Aptil 1991 meeting was scheduled for April 15th. at the BRAEFOOT ATHLETIC CENTRE.

In 2003, RON FRIESEN was inducted into the SASKATCHEWAN SPORTS HALL OF FAME for Diving.

Flashbacks - November 4, 1991

The Sports Committee of the VICTORIA COMMONWEALTH GAMES SOCIETY
was an interesting committee. In 1991, I served on the committee for a one year period while serving as the Boxing Chairman, and on the boxing committee from 1989 to 1992.

Looking back to November 4 1991, 27 individuals would attend the meeting held at the BC Hydro Building which served as the Victoria Commonwealth Games Society Offices. from 5:00 p.m. to 8:10 p.m.

Jim Carter, Kjeld Brodsgaard, Hank Lyth, Ken Porter, Don Smyth, Peter Vizsolyi, Bob Adams, Danny Henry, Wayne MacDonald. John Plantinga, Chris Graham, Bruce Wasylic, Monika Alde, John Edwards, Sandy Peden, Austin Smith, Sandra Stevenson, Brian Zelley, Bob Bearpark, Andre Gallant, Danelle Laidlaw, Norgrove Penny, Gary Taylor, Jim Reed, Terry Wright and serving as the recording secretary - Corrine Lalonde.

In the November meeting 0 the guest was ANDRRE GALLANT of Sports Canada.

In the October 4 the meeting, the guest was SCOTT BRALEY, BC Gymnastics.

KJELD BRODSGAARE - WRESTLING

There is a KJELD BRODSGAARD AWARD to be given to two high school wrestlers to assist them in attending National Championships.

KEN PORTER - Track and Field

In 2009, KEN PORTER, received the ALLAN G. RAE BUILDER AWARD for his contribution to sports officials development and advancement which was presented at the
SPORTS OFFICIALS CANADA ANNUAL AWARDS DINNER - September 26, 2009.

PETER VIZSOLYI - Swimming

In the 19-97/98 year, Swimming Coach PETER VIZSOLYI (U. Vic) and
TOM JOHNSON (UBC)
received Men's Swimming Coach of the Year Awards at the
CSI Championships.

JOHN PLANTINGA - Parks & Recreation and Vollyball

MAY 3, 2003 - JOHN PLANTINGA presented AWARD of MERIT by the British Columbia Recreation & Parks Association.

DR. J. NORGROVE PENNY - Sports Medicine

2007 - ORDER OF CANADA - Dr. J. NORGROVE PENNY was one of 40 to benamed to the ORDER OF CANADA by Govenor General MICHAELLE JEAN.

SANDRA STEVENSON

In 2005, SANDRA STEVENSON was a recipient of a "INFLUENTIAL WOMEN IN BUSINESS AWARD.
